Griffin 180

Small Package, Powerfull Gear!

Griffin 180 Notes:

After we completed the design of the Phoenix we put out a poll to see what people were looking for next. From several categories we provided, the overwhelming winner was a request for a 4” frame that could run 22XX diameter motors. The results of the poll made sense so we decided to proceed with this choice; thus the Griffin was born.

At first we thought that we would just create a Harpie with a 4mm bottom plate and wider arms and motor mounts matching the geometry of the Phoenix and the Wyvern. However, as an alternate during the prototyping phase, we also created a version with removable arms that went across the bottom and held two motors each. Once the prototypes were ready, we assembled and weighed them. We found that there was only a 4.5g penalty to be paid for the removable arms. this made the decision a no brainer as it cut the cost of replacing a broken arm down by about 80%. In addition, we were now looking at a more capable frame that would be holding much more powerful motors. This translates into higher camera angles to manage the additional speed. We went back to the drawing board and gave the Griffin a camera mount similar to the Phoenix, with side plates, as opposed to the front plate mount that was provided with the Harpie. A few more tweaks here and there and the design was complete.
